Are you eligible to apply for a home?
Do you have what it takes to become a
Habitat partner?
To qualify, potential home-owners must meet three criteria:
Need, Ability to Pay, and Willingness to Participate as a Partner with Allegany County Habitat for Humanity.
1) Need – You may be considered for a Habitat home if your present housing is not adequate, and if you are unable to obtain adequate housing through other conventional means. “Inadequate housing” may include problems with structure, water, heat, electrical or sewage systems, or failure to meet property maintenance standards.
2) Ability to Pay – The selected applicant will be purchasing the home from Habitat for Humanity, and will need to demonstrate the ability to meet the monthly mortgage payment. Real estate taxes and insurance are included in this payment. We will help you determine whether you will be able to meet this expense along with your additional living expenses. Habitat volunteers will help you develop a budget.
Your total family income must fall within the following guidelines:

3) Willingness to Partner – When selected, you become a partner family with Habitat for Humanity. You will be required to complete 200 hours of “Sweat Equity” prior to your becoming a homeowner. Some of those hours will be spent assisting in constructing your home and other Habitat homes, which may include clearing the lot, painting, helping with construction, providing food for volunteer workers, or working in the Allegany County Habitat for Humanity Office. Home-ownership and finance classes, as well as fund-raising or public speaking on behalf of Habitat, will also count towards your Sweat Equity hours.
